“The
Draperies’, L’histoire du chapeau, floats
mysteriously, an ambient wave of incidental electronic and acoustic
sounds, both deeply resonant and fundamentally mysterious. At
times the three musicians seem to occupy quite separate worlds and yet
they’re fully, if slowly, responsive to one another’s distinct
impulses. Rather than courting atonality, they develop a wonderous
polytonality, each member pursuing his own melodic impulses. Driver’s
thumb-reeds impart the ancient familiarity of pump organ or harmonium
and the wandering pitches of trombone and guitar suggest the broad
dilation of time.”
